Imrryr5

Imrryr, also known as the Dreaming City and Imrryr the Beautiful, is the capital city of Melniboné. It is a city of tall towers that scintillate with many different colours in the light of the sun.[1]

Government[]

Imrryr is the seat of power in Melniboné where the Emperor rules the Dragon Isle with absolute authority from the Ruby Throne in the city's high central tower.[1]

Defenses[]

Imrryr is a coastal city protected on the seaward side by a great labyrinth known as the Sea Maze, excavated into the cliff that guards the city's inland harbour. This provides an excellent defense against seaborne invasions. In addition to soldiers and those who are skilled in the art of sorcery, other defenses available to Imrryr include an army of dragons and a fleet of battle barges.[1]

Trade[]

Despite centuries of Melnibonéan decline by the time of Elric, Imrryr still has vast wealth, making it a tempting target for hostile Southlander barbarian ships from the Young Kingdoms. Nonetheless, a great deal of nonviolent trade also takes place between Imrryr and the merchants of those nations.[1]

Nickname[]

Imrryr's nickname, the Dreaming City, derives from the fact that many Melnibonéans, from nobles to slaves, have active dream lives, enhanced by certain plants and drugs. It is in their dreams, both magnificent and monstrous, that they find their greatest pleasures. Slaves in particular have come to depend on their dreams as an escape from their unfortunate reality which, by design, has made them more easily controllable by their masters.[1]
